Art Appreciation

The students in K4 through 4th grade learn about the lives and art of individual artists. This is accomplished by reading children’s biographies of the artists, reviewing representative art and lively discussion. The information is then reinforced by use of fun jingles and games. The study an artist is followed by an art project in which the student creates an artwork in the style of the artist. Other information on elements of art are taught as applicable to the art project.

The student's artwork is displayed at the end of the year at the Living History Festival. The students also each receive a portfolio at the completion of the year which includes their artwork, photos of “artists in action,” and a biography page for each artist studied.

Additional art projects include:Greeting card fundraiser – individual student’s art is reproduced on greeting cards and sold to raise funds for the fine arts program. Christmas cards are designed by the students and printed. Artwork is created to be auctioned at the Cornerstone Academy Benefit Auction. Some of the artists study include: Michelangelo, Leonardo di Vinci, Raphael, Vincent Van Gogh, Seuvat, Georgia O’Keefe, Jackson Pollock, Henri Rousseau, and Kandinsky.
